Summary of Action Items
Notes:
1
Minutes of the last telcon
No corrections to the minutes were requested.
Hans-Peter Plag
asked whether there were any additions to the agenda. He pointed out that in the latest draft of the
agenda, he had added
Any Other Business
to the agenda. He added that he would
like to discuss there the option of an regional Workshop focusing on Arctic or High-latitude coast zones. He
mentioned that this addition to the agenda was motivated by an e-mail exchange with Hugues Lantuit,
one of the persons
who expressed interest in the CZCP.
There were no further additions to the agenda.
2
Status of Action Items
The list of actions items was available as
html
. The action items not covered
by separate agenda points were briefly discussed.
With respect to
Action Item
CZCP-CG-4-6:
Hans-Peter Plag
will discuss with
Douglas Cripe
whether a letter could be sent by the GEO Secretariat to the GEO Principals
in the Southern Mediterranean Countries informing them about the Recommendation of the Athens Workshop to
hold a North African Workshop with the goal to bring together decision makers and providers of Earth
observations in order to discuss improved decision support. The letter would also ask for support from the
countries for the organization of the workshop.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2010-03-31,
Hans-Peter Plag
and
Douglas Cripe
reported that they had very recently started to discuss the issue. Since he had not been
involved in the preparations of the Cairo Workshop,
Douglas Cripe
requested more information on the situation.
Hans-Peter Plag
briefly summarized the history.
Douglas Cripe
was positive that the GEO Secretariat could send a letter to the GEO
Principles in the North African GEO member countries and ask them to get involved in organizing the workshop.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-1:
Hans-Peter Plag
will prepare a draft letter to the GEO Principles of the GEO Members Countries in
North Africa and provide this draft to
Michael Bruno,
Paul DiGiacomo,
and
Douglas Cripe
for comments.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2010-05-01.
Robert Christian
reported that in following up
Action Item

Robert Christian
will contact Carles Ibanez and discuss with him options for CZCP sessions at the upcoming Delta
Workshop or a future dedicated CZCP workshop in the Mediterranean (with focus on the Southern Mediterranean).
Responsible:
Robert Christian,
Deadline:
2010-03-31,
he had contacted Carles Ibanez, who offered to organize a CZCP session at the DeltaNet Workshop scheduled to
take place in 2011 in the Ebro Delta in Spain.
Robert Christian
volunteered to take this further, but asked for others to get involved, too.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-2:
Robert Christian
will develop a CZCP session to be held at the 2011 DeltaNet Workshop planned to take place in the
Ebro Delta in Spain. He will stay in contact with
Carles Ibanez,
and he will involve others in the
preparation of this session.
Responsible:
Robert Christian,
Deadline:
2010-08-01.
Hans-Peter Plag
reported that he followed up
Action Item
CZCP-CG-4-8:
Hans-Peter Plag
will respond to all those who submitted an expression of interest/membership application.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2010-03-15,
by sending e-mails to all those who had expressed interest in the CZCP, thank for the interest,
explaining to them the current situation, and asking for input to the CZCP Newsletter. He added the
e-mail address of these persons to the full CZCP e-mail list. He also reported that
he send a Call for Contribution to the Newsletter to this full e-mail list. This list does not include
many of the participants of the Athens and Cotonou workshop, and he pointed out that an invitation to contribute
to the newsletter should be sent to them together with the questionnaire.
Concerning
Action Item
CZCP-CG-4-11:
Paul DiGiacomo
will look into the AIP-3 CfP and, if appropriate will establish a link between the relevant
scenario(s) and the CZCP.
Responsible:
Paul DiGiacomo,
Deadline:
2010-03-15,
Paul DiGiacomo
informed that he did not have a chance to review the AIP-3 CfP.
With respect to
Action Item
CZCP-CG-4-12:
Paul DiGiacomo
and
Hans-Peter Plag
will identify dates and venue for a CZCP Workshop focusing on the development of a
CZCP Work Plan. This workshop should preferably take place in May or June 2010.
Responsible:
Paul DiGiacomo,
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2010-04-15,
it was agreed that a doodle poll should be set up asap in order to find an agreeable date first and
then decide on the exact location.
Hans-Peter Plag
volunteered
to set this up after the telecon.
While discussing the experience with finding a date for the telecon, there was consensus that finding a fix day
and week in the month for the monthly telecons would be difficult. In order to maximize participation, it
would be necessary to use monthly doodle polls to find suitable dates and times.
3
Questionnaires for the survey of CZCP Regional Workshop Participants.
Robert Christian
had made available a draft questionnaire, available as
doc
, for the survey of the participants in the Athens
workshop.
Liana McManus
provided edits prior to CZCP-CG-5, see
doc
.
Michael Bruno
commented that he considers the questionnaire a good action and expressed his expectation that
many responses will comment on the need and the lack of sufficient funding.
Liana McManus
saw the possibility that
the feedback might help in identifying issues for which funding could be raised. There was general agreement that
the questionnaire with the edits proposed by
Liana McManus
was good to go. It was emphasized that the questionnaire should
be sent out as soon as possible in order to get responses back and summarized for the first CZCP newsletter scheduled
for publication on June 1, 2010.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-3:
Robert Christian
will summarize the results of the questionnaire sent to the Athens workshop participants
and report to the Core Group. If the results are
sufficient, he will prepare a brief summary for the newsletter.
Responsible:
Robert Christian,
Deadline:
2010-05-15.
With respect to the questionnaire for the participants of the Cotonou Workshop,
Robert Christian
pointed out that mainly
the first sentence needs to be modified to reflect that the workshop was rather recent. Otherwise, there was
consensus to use the same questionnaire as for the Athens workshop.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-4:
Jimmy Adegoke
will modify the draft questionnaire made available by
Robert Christian
and send this to the participants of the
Cotonou workshop together with an invitation to contribute to the CZCP newsletter.
Responsible:
Jimmy Adegoke,
Deadline:
2010-04-15.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-5:
Jimmy Adegoke
will summarize the results of the questionnaire sent to the Cotonou workshop participants
and report to the Core Group. If the results are
sufficient, he will prepare a brief summary for the newsletter.
Responsible:
Jimmy Adegoke,
Deadline:
2010-05-15.
4
CZCP Work Plan Meeting
It was agreed that the Work Plan meeting should be held in late May early June 2010. The first step would be
to decide on a suitable date. The location could be decided once the date was known. No date was decided during
the telecon.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-6:
Hans-Peter Plag
will set up a doodle poll for a date for the one-day CZCP Work Plan meeting in late May or early June.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2010-04-12.
5
Puerto Rico Workshop: Status and next steps
Paul DiGiacomo
reported that he had been in contact with
Doug Wilson,
who is a co-chair of IOCARIB.
Doug Wilson
expressed strong
interest in the workshop and would like to contribute to the organization. He sees an opportunity to energize
IOCARIB. He would be happy to be appointed in a role including co-chairing the Steering Committee. There were no
objections to invite
Doug Wilson
to co-chair the workshop Steering Committee.
Doug Wilson
also is
actively involved in CZ-related activities in Puerto Rico. As a down-side of holding the workshop in Puerto Rico,
it was mentioned that some colleagues from Cuba might have difficulties to get access to the workshop.
Paul DiGiacomo
also mentioned that he had been in contact with
Peter Colohan,
who indicated that GEOSS in Americas would like
to see the workshop go ahead.
Michael Bruno
reported that he had been in contact with
Julio Morell,
who was still very supportive of the workshop and
ready to take the role as a host
for the workshop. However, the timing would still be an issue.
Hans-Peter Plag
emphasized that the Ministerial Summit on
Earth Observation in November was not an important issue, since most of the preparations were already well under
way.
Douglas Cripe
confirmed this view. Therefore, convening the workshop later in 2010 or early in 2011 would be
reasonable choices, since preparation of a well organized workshop at an earlier date would already be difficult.
Michael Bruno
pointed out that San Juan would be the best place. The alternative would be at the University,
which is in Mayaguez, but that would be
inconvenient, since it is 2 hours from the airport at San Juan. It was agreed that
January/February 2011 would most likely be the best option, although hotel prices during that time might be high in
Puerto Rico.
As a result of the discussion,
it was agreed that
Paul DiGiacomo
would continue the discussion with
Doug Wilson
and
Michael Bruno
would follow up the
development with
Julio Morell.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-7:
Paul DiGiacomo
will invite
Doug Wilson
to co-chair the Puerto Rico Workshop Steering Committee and continue the
discussion about the workshop with him.
Responsible:
Paul DiGiacomo,
Deadline:
2010-05-15.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-8:
Michael Bruno
will continue the discussion about the Puerto Rico Workshop with
Julio Morell
and in particular will
discuss suitable dates and locations for the Workshop in January/February 2010.
Responsible:
Michael Bruno,
Deadline:
2010-05-15.
Hans-Peter Plag
took the opportunity to inform the group that the CZCP would likely be invited to contribute to
activities in preparation of the Ministerial Summit and the Summit Exhibition.
Douglas Cripe
confirmed that
the CoPs would be important for the Summit, and informed that the discussion of how to integrate the CoPs
was likely to come to a conclusion in the next days. Therefore, the CoPs could expect to get solicitations
for input in the next days.
6
CZCP Session at the DeltaNet meeting, likely to be held in May 2011 in the Ebro Delta, Spain.
The topic had already been discussed under topic 2. IT was, however, again pointed out that
Robert Christian
volunteered to be a convener of the CZCP session at the workshop in Spain,
and it was emphasized that others will be needed in addition.
7
Next CZCP-CG Telecon
The brief discussion of the past experience and the date/time for the next telecons
made clear that it would be difficult to find a fix day and week in each month for
the monthly telecons. Most likely, a doodle poll will be needed every month.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-9:
Hans-Peter Plag
will set up a doodle poll for CZCP-CG-6 in the first two weeks of May 2010.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2010-04-12.
8
Any Other Business
Hans-Peter Plag
reported briefly on a e-mail exchange with
Hugues Lantuit.
Hugues Lantuit
informed
Hans-Peter Plag
about the
Arctic Coastal Dynamics project (a somewhat out-dated link is
http://web.arcticportal.org/acd
),
which has held annual workshops since 1999 with the exception of 2008 and 2009.
This series of workshops has resulted in a number of CZ-related products and
a very well integrated community including researchers from North America, Europe, and Russia.
Hugues Lantuit
considers this a good platform to jointly organize in 2011 a regional CZCP workshop
focusing on either the CZs in the Arctic or high-latitude CZs on both hemispheres.
Hans-Peter Plag
asked the group whether this idea finds support. There was general agreement that it would be
worthwhile to developing the idea further.
Paul DiGiacomo
requested that
Pablo Clemente-Colon
would be involved in
the discussion.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-5-10:
Hans-Peter Plag
will contact
Hugues Lantuit
and
Pablo Clemente-Colon
and discuss further the idea of a regional CZCP workshop focusing
on issues related to CZs in high-latitudes, with this workshop potentially being organized jointly by CZCP,
the Arctic Crustal Dynamics Project, the National Ice Center, and other relevant organizations.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2010-05-31.
