Supporting Decision Making for an Integrated Coastal Zone Management along the Southern Mediterranean Coast
2010, Cairo, Egypt.
Format: Plenary sessions combined with breakout sessions. Plenary session will include presentations, breakout-session reports and discussion. They will provide guidance and charges for the detailed breakout sessions.
- Day 1 highlights: Plenary session that introduces the GEO perspective for the region and reviews the links between Earth observation and decision making in terms of institutions, stakeholders, and challenges. Invited presentations by representatives of GEO, GEO Member Country, and Participating Organizations active in the region. Plenary session that reviews the current situation along the North African Coast with respect to monitoring, data availability, and decision support structures. Invited presentation from relevant agencies responsible for monitoring, modeling, forecasting, assessments, and decision support. Invited presentations from governmental agencies receiving decision support based on Earth observation. Discussion to clarify the 'desirable future' in terms of specific goals. Breakout sessions to discuss and develop different aspects of the roadmap to reach from the present situation to the desired future.
- Day 2 highlights: Plenary with breakout group reports on the roadmap. Follow-on breakout discussions to finalize the roadmap and to draft the resolution text. Plenary session to agree on and endorse the roadmap and resolution.
- Day 3 highlights: Breakout sessions toward development of at least one pilot project fitting into the roadmap. Afternoon plenary reports from the breakout groups, and a discussion of the work plan of the pilot project.
In addition, a one day field trip will be offered for the workshop participants to the Nile delta and the city of Port Said (2 hours travel from Cairo).
