Scientific Sessions: Monday 15 February to Wednesday 17 February
Plenary sessions that provide guidance and charges for detailed breakout sessions toward developing an implementation plan to address user needs, with development of supporting pilot projects. The breakout sessions facilitated assessment of future regional monitoring capabilities; helped identify useful best practice in the African context; and the establishment of user forums that constitute the actual African Coastal Zone Community of Practice. There were daily poster sessions to illustrate present capabilities and future needs of countries and progress within regional projects. The poster sessions also provided a visible forum for input to workshop goals from a broad range of participants, which served to justify the granting of financial support to workshop attendees.
Joint Governance Session: Wednesday 17, February
Governance Session with top level officials from government agencies and international institutions on climate change impacts on water resources (lake, river and coastal systems) and the coastal environment. Emphasis was on the ECOWAS sub-region. Communiqué from Days 1 – 2 were tabled for discussion and strategies for its implementation were discussed. The Governance Session, among other topics, discussed modalities for creating a Regional Marine Policy Centre of Excellence in Africa.
