Earth Observation Support for Sustainable Tourism in Small Island States
March 9-11, 2011, Puerto Rico


Expected Outcomes: Potential activities and products resulting from the series of Workshops include:

  • A comprehensive overview of decision making related to operation and planning of tourism, including requirements related to Earth observations, and an overview of the shareholders and stakeholders involved in island tourism.
  • A detailed list of organizations and agencies that will use Earth Observations for tourism planning and management.
  • A description of examples of Applications of Earth observations and services in the different theme areas, including a discussion of the extent to which these examples are scalable and replicable in other locations.
  • Consideration of what local observing systems need to be developed that contribute and integrating into a regional system.
  • A mechanisms for maintaining interaction between the tourism sector and the providers and observing systems, as well as the planning and management community and observing systems.
  • Identification of resources (both in terms of capital, capacity, and services) and specific applications of these resources.
  • Identification of regional representatives for follow-on activities.
